Two weeks ago Foreign Minister Winston Peters told a public meeting that when it comes to Palestine “we (the government) have done our best”.  It seems that what the minister really means is that the government has gone as far as it can without offending the US or Israel. This appears to be the government’s highest foreign affairs priority despite Israel’s unrestrained, deliberate mass killing of Palestinian civilians.

At every point the government has failed to meet even the most basic of human rights duties under international law:

Failure to condemn Israel’s slaughter and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians
Failure to condemn Israel’s stifling of food and humanitarian supplies to Palestinians in Gaza
Failure to call for an immediate permanent ceasefire in Gaza
Failure to reinstate funding for UNRWA and bring forward a doubling of our contribution to meet the desperate need in Gaza
Failure to stop bombing Yemen
Failure to join South Africa’s case of genocide against Israel at the ICJ
Failure to shut down the Israeli embassy in Wellington
Failure to grant emergency humanitarian visas to Palestinians in Gaza who have family in Aotearoa

In the span of just a few hours we learned that Israel committed a horrific massacre at al-Shifa hospital, struck an Iranian consulate in Syria killing multiple Iranian military officers, and killed a vehicle full of international aid workers in an airstrike. This murderous regime is out of control.

❖ Israel is so dedicated to protecting civilian life that it’s deliberately gunning down unarmed Palestinians whenever they walk within firing range and then adding them to its “Hamas terrorists killed” tally. Haaretz reports that the IDF has set up “kill zones” in Gaza where they just shoot anything that moves, with an IDF reserve officer saying the number of Hamas members Israel claims to have killed is massively inflated because “In practice, a terrorist is anyone the IDF has killed in the areas in which its forces operate.” Haaretz notes that the three escaped Israeli hostages the IDF gunned down in December had wandered into one of these kill zones.

❖ A Doctors Without Borders physician went on Sky News to talk about Israel’s deliberate destruction of Gaza’s healthcare system, and the Murdoch shill anchor who was interviewing her asked her if Hamas was active in al-Shifa hospital fighting Israelis. The doctor, Tanya Haj-Hassan, told him “I am just shocked that we’re still having this conversation” and went on to describe how Israel’s assault on Gazan healthcare workers is so methodical that Gazan hospital staff have been changing out of their scrubs before leaving work because Israeli troops are picking off anyone in scrubs.

Israel Has Assured Us It’s “Only Killing Hamas”
So after the IDF slaughtered 7 volunteer chefs and food workers on Monday, we now know that World Central Kitchen, who has served more than 43M meals to Palestinians, must be a terrorist operation.  Israel claims the seven international volunteer chefs and food workers it killed in a targeted air strike on Monday in Gaza at Chef José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen relief site were actually Terrorist Hamas Cooks.

“They were running a terror operation using cumin, curry and kale,” an IDF spokesman claimed.

“They were also hiding Hamas militants inside large vats of hummus. Hamas in the hummus, you could say. You have no idea how low these Muslims will go to kill Israelis with their rotted foods which have sat in aid trucks for months at the border and are now used to pelt innocent settlers who have come from Park Slope in Brooklyn to the West Bank in Judea to take land that is rightfully theirs.”

The IDF spokesman continued: “We are sorry for destroying Chef Andres’ attempt to feed those who are food insecure or food challenged. Indeed, Gaza is now a literal food desert! A desert in the desert! Get it?!

“We know the importance of eating a meal or two a week. But when they start smuggling weapons inside pitas and baklavas, we simply will not tolerate that.”

The IDF said that it appears there are signs that the terrorist cooks may have also been holding some of the hostages in a cooler full of cantaloupe, hidden somewhere inside the 23,000 miles of tunnels under the 5-mile wide Gaza Strip.

“Let’s just acknowledge what the whole world already knows: There is no terror like the terror of a Michelin 3-Star celebrity chef in his kitchen on reality TV. And so none of us should be surprised that terrorists have found their way into an operation with numerous large and lethal knives and hand-held mini flamethrowers.

“Look, this isn’t just some foodie fight going on,” The IDF Colonel insisted. “This is war — a war where we have the bombs, the planes, the destroyers, the satellites and the nuclear weapons. But trust me — they have all the chickpeas! We will not stop until we blow everything up, even if that means us having to do it, one child’s falafel stand at a time.”

He concluded:
“Oh… um, and yes… freeing the hostages is our absolute #1 priority!!”
